Unlisted IP Phone Registration

Unlisted IP Phone Registration

Do you have a device that is not listed under the Device Group or Device Type fields in the application? No problem! This article will show you how to configure your own device for use with Sharpen.

PLEASE NOTE: Sharpen cannot provide advanced support for devices not listed under the Device Group and Device Type fields in the application. If you're unsure if a specific model is supported, please contact us and we can confirm. If your device is outside the supported device types, Sharpen can only verify that your device has successfully registered with our network. We may be able to provide logging in the event client provided hardware is not working as expected, but further troubleshooting and configuration is the responsibility of the client.

Prerequisites:

  • The device must be SIP compliant.

  • 1 Connect license for each device.

  • You must have administrator access to the device.

  • The device should be restored to factory defaults.

Required information:

All of the information required to provision your device can be found under Admin > Configuration > Extensions. Click the Edit icon for the desired extension to view its credentials. Take note of the following items:

  • Username: e.g. XXXXconYYYY

  • Password: Password is case sensitive.

  • Server Address: e.g. us1.vbx25.05.b.sipvbx.com

  • Registration Time: This value is always 240 seconds. The registration time is a value that Sharpen expects to receive from the device and is not visible on the extensions page unless that device is not meeting the requirement. This function controls how often the device re-registers itself with Sharpen.

The server address you retrieve will likely not be the exact address you use. Here is a breakdown of the address and which parts are required:

  • us1: Region (Required)

  • vbx25: Cluster (Required)

  • 05.b: Zone

  • sipvbx.com: Domain (Required)

The zone is not used when provisioning the server address to a device. This means that us1.vbx25.05.b.sipvbx.com becomes us1.vbx25.sipvbx.com.

Provisioning:

Now that you have collected the necessary information, it is time to provision your device! Generally, there are two methods of provisioning: through the menus of the device itself or through a Web Interface that can be accessed via the device’s Local IP Address. We typically recommend the Web Interface as entering data via the device menus can be cumbersome. Please keep in mind that these are general guidelines, and the process may be different for your device.

  1. Login to Sharpen.

  2. Navigate to Admin > Configuration > Extensions.

  3. Edit the extension you will be assigning the device to.

  4. Set the Device Group as Other.

  5. Set the Device Type as Other.

  6. Enter the MAC Address for the device. (Note: This is not required for “Other” devices, but is useful for tracking where your hardware is assigned.)

  7. Save the extension.

  8. Access the provisioning menu of your device.

  9. Enter the username identified above. Potential alternate field names:

    1. Username

    2. Account name

    3. User ID

    4. Register Name

  10. Enter the password identified above. Potential alternate field names:

    1. Password

    2. Secret

  11. Enter the server address identified above. Potential alternate field names:

    1. Server

    2. Domain

    3. Registrar

    4. Server Host

  12. Enter the registration timer value of 240 seconds / 4 minutes. Potential alternate field names:

    1. Expires (s)

    2. Registration Expiry

    3. Register Every

    4. Server Expires

  13. Save and apply your changes. Some devices may need to be rebooted for settings to take effect.

  14. After the device has finished applying it’s new settings, refresh the extension page. You should now see that the device is connected to Sharpen.

Special Note Regarding Analog Telephony Adapters (ATAs):

Sharpen extensions are built and configured to transmit voice. Sharpen does not provide support for the use of "Modem" type devices across ATAs. Any use of this equipment across an ATA on the Sharpen Network is done so at the risk of the client. Data transmission across phone lines is very different from Voice transmission, and the compression used can damage data transmissions.

Examples of unsupported ATA uses:

  • Fax - Sharpen does offer an alternative solution for Analog Faxing.

  • Security Alarm

  • Fire Alarm

  • Postage Meter

  • Modem
