Bluetooth Headset Muting
Overview
Some Bluetooth headsets may experience automatic volume adjustments while in use with the Chrome browser, which can result in the microphone gradually lowering in volume and eventually muting the agent mid-call. This behavior is caused by a Chrome feature that allows WebRTC to automatically adjust input volume. Disabling this setting resolves the issue and ensures consistent microphone performance during interactions.
Issue
A Chrome feature known as Automatic Volume Leveling can affect Bluetooth headset devices by progressively reducing the microphone input volume over time. For agents using Bluetooth headsets, this can result in their audio becoming inaudible to the customer or being muted entirely without warning during an active call.
Resolution
To prevent Chrome from automatically adjusting the microphone volume on Bluetooth devices, follow these steps:
Open the Chrome browser and navigate to
chrome://flagsin the address bar.Use the search bar on the Flags page to locate the "Allow WebRTC to adjust the input volume" flag.
Click the dropdown next to the flag and select Disabled.
Relaunch Chrome when prompted to apply the change.
Once the flag is disabled, Chrome will no longer automatically reduce or mute input from Bluetooth devices during use.
Disabling this flag may affect automatic volume adjustment behavior in other Chrome applications or browser-based tools that rely on WebRTC input controls. If unexpected audio issues arise in other applications after making this change, review and adjust your audio settings accordingly.
